We encourage artists working in all mediums to apply, including painters, textile artists, musicians, performers, photographers, printmakers, those working in film and video, and conceptual and installation artists. Artists must live within a one-hours-drive of the Recology San Francisco facility.

Before submitting your application, you are required to take a tour of the facility (we recommend visiting us before you begin writing your proposal). If it has been more than three years since you have been on a tour, you must attend another one. Tours are offered on the third Saturday of every month. Please call 415-330-1414 to make a reservation.

Application Schedule:

June 1- August, 2015: Applications are accepted

October, 2015 (tentative): Selection committee reviews materials and selects eight to nine artists to interview. Applicants will receive email notification, so please make sure you submit your correct email address.

November, 2015 (tentative): Interviews will be conducted in the afternoon. The selection committee will choose residency recipients immediately following the interviews. Applicants will be notified by email or telephone within one week.

Selection of Artists

Our advisory board, which is composed of former artists-in-residence, arts professionals, environmentalists, and educators, reviews applications in October and selects eight to ten candidates to interview in November. Interviews are scheduled between 12:00 and 5:00 p.m. At that time, finalists must make a short presentation about their work. The board awards six residencies per year.

The board evaluates applications based on the artist’s demonstrated commitment to resource conservation and recycling through art, their experience in art education and/or environmental education, how the residency can provide the artist with professional growth, the quality of previous work, and the artist’s reputation and references. The board also considers the artist’s use of materials and the types of tools available in the studio.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

At this time, we only accept applications from local, career-level, professional artists. Students currently enrolled at any university, college, or other educational institution will not be considered. We do not accept applications from artists who reside a driving distance of more than one hour from San Francisco.

Student Programs

Students studying art at local colleges and universities may contact the program at any time by calling (415) 330-1415 to determine the availability of non-paid student residencies. Go to the Student Artist in Residence Program page for more information.
