hang artHang Art is pleased to announce “Roommates” featuring new works from Anthony May and Ilya Shkipin. Both bodies of work serve as explorations of human interaction and levels of detachment increasingly affecting our relationships. Through a combination of mixed media collage and paintings, “Roommates” examines our perspective on public versus personal space, and how it affects our daily interactions.

Anthony May (b.1965) holds a BFA from Pratt Institute in New York and currently lives in Alameda, California. May begins his paintings from meticulously observed preparatory sketches, but he relies on instinct to carry the work forward from there. As a result of their own developmental stages, the finished works become diaries of a process that maintains an open spontaneity and freshness.

Ilya Shkipin (b.1989) holds a BFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art in San Francisco and currently lives and works in Hayward, California. Shkipin employs mixed-media impasto technique to interpret the spectrum of emotional response through amorphous imagery. Shkipin depicts intense emotion from a journalistic perspective, capturing his anguished figures in moments frozen in time. He explores the transformation of shapes, surreal imagery and blind line work. The technique varies from digital illustration to traditional mediums, such as watercolor, ink, graphite and oils.
