Since the release of their debut album Homework in 1997, Daft Punk, comprised of musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, have been at the forefront of  the contemporary electronic music genre. Last year Daft Punk released its first studio album in eight years, Random Access Memories, winning five Grammys including Album of the Year, as well as Record of the Year for Get Lucky.  It is precisely this kind of wide spread admiration for the French duo that prompted an art group show devoted to all things Daft Punk, Daft Punk Deux at Gauntlet Gallery. This is the second annual art exhibit in the Tenderloin art space, which places on view artwork that draws from Daft Punk’s music videos, the extraordinary visuals in their live performances, and the iconic personas they’ve fashioned. This large group show is a particularly strong example of many in San Francisco currently that invites artists to pay homage to cultural icons and pop culture, from film actors and directors to musicians and singers by creating a unique interpretation or representation of the subject’s particular attractive qualities.

This year’s iteration of this popular art exhibit features original works of art inspired by Daft Punk by over 40 painters, sculptors, and digital and screen print artists. Perhaps because of  their iconic use of disguises while in public and performing, wearing ornate helmets and gloves that create robot personas, and rarely granting interviews or appearances on television, Daft Punk has a certain mysterious air about them which lends more room for creative interpretation of this seminal French electronic music duo. Participating artists include Adam Juresko, Adam Rabalais, Andre DeFreitas, Andrew Turner, Arabella Proffer, Augie Pagan, Boneface, Caia Koopman, Cam Floyd, Chase Tafoya, Chris Koehler, Craig Drake, Cuyler Smith, Dan Almasy, David Grizzle, David Natale, David Blake, Epyon5, Eric Petersen, Fab Ciraolo, Florian Meacci, Jenny Liz Rome, Jeremy Enecio, John Larriva, Juan De Dios Garza Vela, Kellen Breen, Marie Bergeron, Mario Wagner, Mike Bell, Paul Ainsworth, Rebecca Adams, Rocco Malatesta, Roland Tamayo, Ryan Sanchez, Scott Scheildy, Serge Gay, Tomi Monstre, Tramaine Dion, Wednesday Kirwin,Ron Guyatt & William Arvin.
