Little Paper Planes

Apply for an LPP+ Residency 2015 Here

Since 2004, Little Paper Planes has connected artists and collectors, sharing the excitement of collecting artwork, prints, handmade objects and ephemera. In our ninth year, LPP expanded from an online only organization into a storefront on Valencia Street in San Francisco. With this expansion we widened our programming to include a residency within the new physical location.

The LPP + Residency offers a diverse group of makers – artists, curators, collectives, photographers, writers, musicians, craftspeople – the opportunity to engage to the public in a 4-6 week long residency at the shop in San Francisco. Residents receive space to set up a workshop, studio, office or pop-up shop within the Little Paper Planes store.

Expanding on our commitment in helping artists, we felt it was important to offer free space to encourage our creative community to try out new projects or just have a place to work. They also have the opportunity to engage with the local community at large since the space is in a high traffic location.

Little Paper Planes provides support to assist with screenings, readings, lectures and workshops during the course of the residency. Open to individuals and groups, the resident(s) are encouraged to engage with the public in some capacity. Each residency culminates with a publication and/or print edition published by LPP as an extension of the residency. SFMOMA’s Library and Archives collect all publications.

Guidelines:

Little Paper Planes is open to a variety of art practices. Due to the public nature of the residency, we encourage artists to consider that aspect when applying. We are interested in artists who can use the space in interesting and thoughtful ways. In the past we have had artists create installations, use it as an office space, studio, pop-up shop, workshops as well as working on projects with the public. LPP+ is a perfect space to test out new ideas.

-Send 6 images of your work as JPG’s or links to videos or sound pieces.

-Short bio and artist statement.

-Write a paragraph stating why you want the residency and how you will use the residency.

Things to know:

– Resident can only work in the space during the shop hours. (12-7pm)

– The space is empty so the resident can do whatever they want to make it their own. It must return to the original state when the residency is over. We can supply chairs, a small table and rug if needed.

– $100 stipend

– The shop has a printer, scanner, 13″ TV, projector, screen for projections and wireless Internet.

– If the resident is selling a product, all transactions go through the LPP shop. The shop takes 50% of sales and pays resident at the end of the month.

-We encourage artist talks.

-A publication will be created with the resident after the residency is over.

-We cannot accommodate living arrangements for people outside of the Bay Area. We can see if anyone has a room, but a place to stay is the resident’s responsibility.

Dimensions of the space:

-The space is on the small side. There are white walls and cement floors. There is also a back area outside if something big needs to be built, spray painted, or anything toxic/messy needs to be used.

-The back wall is 9ft.

-There are 4 shelves on the left wall taking up 3 1/2 ft of the 10ft of the wall.

– Right wall is 10ft which includes a door to the LPP office.

– There is a 3ft opening (no door) which divides the residency and the shop.

All applicants chosen for 2015 will be announced early December. There will be an outside jury assisting in the selection process.
